Does ‘socio-economic’ make it less offensive?

There’s an article up on The Drum called ‘Feeding children addictive drugs’ which says,

Caffeine consumption by children and teens has long been a regulatory topic for the Federal Government but clearly many parents out there, particularly those from low socio-economic backgrounds, are reluctant to cut out what is often a staple component of their and subsequently their children’s diets.

Unsuprisingly the comments suggest that at least a few people got offended by this claim (which does not reference any evidence).
